“When the Toronto Symphony Orchestra co-commissioned composer Kevin Lau to create a symphonic suite based on his hour-long 2024 ballet, Kimiko’s Pearl, the two were hardly strangers. Far from it.
The 42-year-old Canadian served as the TSO’s RBC Affiliate Composer from 2012 to 2015 and has written seven works for the orchestra—three during his tenure and four later. But the connection goes even further than that.
The Hong Kong native moved with his family to Toronto when he was 7 and has happy memories of attending TSO concerts as a child, long before he had any inkling that he wanted to be a composer.
This close familiarity was front and centre as Lau was writing the Symphonic Suite from Kimiko’s Pearl, which will receive its World Première during the Kimiko’s Pearl & Romantic Treasures concert on April 9 and 11 with Music Director Gustavo Gimeno…”
