The SOCAN Foundation has announced winners for the 2021 Awards for Young Composers and we are thrilled to congratulate all winners for this year’s competition who are creating new music in Canada.
We want to especially congratulate CMC Associate Composer Francis Battah who won both the Grand Prize and First Prize, as well as CMC Associate Composers Henry From, Katerina Gimon, James Lowrie, Stephanie Orlando and Liam Ritz who won prizes in one or more instrumentation categories as well as the opportunity to showcase their works with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada Residency. Finally, congratulations to the CMC’s Library Assistant Michael Selvaggi who has also won multiple prizes in the young composer category. Bravo!
The competition awards young and emerging composers who are under the age of 30 with the opportunity to have original works examined by a jury of distinguished composers for excellence recognition and prize money. The awards are organized into two streams, each with its own prizes, and total in over $70K awarded. The Awards for Young Composers has four prizes in the categories of Large Ensemble, Chamber Ensemble, Solo and Duet, and Choral, as well as a special prize for applicants 21 years and younger. The Awards for Emerging Screen Composers recognizes works in two categories: original musical themes or scores created exclusively for audio-visual support.
