Breathe & Sprout
for string quartet
Release Date: March 20, 2020
CMC Associate composer Roydon Tse’s inaugural Centretracks release features two stand-alone works performed by the Interro String Quartet. The compositions featured are Breathe (2015) which was the winner of the Cecilia String Quartet’s composition competition and Sprout (2019) a recently commissioned work by the Interro String Quartet with funding from the Ontario Arts Council.
Both works are tied together by the theme of nature: Breathe is inspired by breathing patterns and Sprout, the gradual growth of a seedling from the earth. While similar in theme, they are however contrasting emotionally, with Sprout focusing on a youthful optimism that arises from the beginnings of life and Breathe, a meditation on the brevity and temporality that each life faces.
