Eadem mutata resurgo (I arise again the same though changed) provides the theme (or concept) for my composition. I conceptualised Angels and Demons at Play as a pataphor: an extended metaphor that creates its own context; that which occurs when a lizard’s tail has grown so long it breaks off and grows a new lizard. For example, discontinuity is a feature of my composition. Normally, disconnecting materials within a musical composition leads to a lack of musical cohesion. In my work, I make an effort to nurture discontinuity as an intrinsic feature of musical development; that is to say, the frequent alternation between contrasting materials becomes a familiar trope – a continuity of discontinuities. In this respect, I attempt to extend the angel and demon metaphors to the point of re-contextualisation (i.e., a pataphor).
