“Beauty, Charming, Fair and Young” is a reel set scored for bassoon quartet. Cape Breton musicians traditionally use the Simon Fraser Collection of 1816, “The Airs and Melodies Peculiar to the Highlands of Scotland and the Isles” as a source of musical materials to be performed in sets of music at local Cèilidhs, social functions and kitchen parties. Many times these sets feature a listening air as an introduction followed by a strathspey and conclude with a reel. The set presented here follows in that tradition and has been sourced from the collection. The work opens with the air “Beauty, Charming, Fair and Young.” It is followed by the strathspey “Dawted Mary” and concludes with the reel “Lady Mary Hope Vere.” I do hope you enjoy performing this taste of Cape Breton’s musical legacy.
