« Beauty, Charming, Fair and Young » is a reel set scored for bassoon quartet. Cape Breton musicians traditionally use the Simon Fraser Collection of 1816, « The Airs and Melodies Peculiar to the Highlands of Scotland and the Isles » as a source of musical materials to be performed in sets of music at local Cèilidhs, social functions and kitchen parties. Many times these sets feature a listening air as an introduction followed by a strathspey and conclude with a reel. The set presented here follows in that tradition and has been sourced from the collection. The work opens with the air « Beauty, Charming, Fair and Young. » It is followed by the strathspey « Dawted Mary » and concludes with the reel « Lady Mary Hope Vere. » I do hope you enjoy performing this taste of Cape Breton’s musical legacy.
