Thomas D’Arcy McGee was born in Ireland in 1825. He moved to Canada to help found a new nation that would be free of European conflicts. He was a novelist, poet, newspaper editor and eventually a member of parliament and Father of Confederation. He was assassinated in Ottawa in 1868. It is generally believed that his demise was organized by the Fenians, a group of Irish militants, who plotted to take over Canada. Organized in the U.S., they made several attacks in various parts of Canada, but without success.
