Celebrating Excellence in Classical Music: 2025 JUNO Award Winners Announced

March 31, 2025 – The Canadian music community gathered to celebrate the country’s most outstanding achievements in classical music at the 2025 JUNO Awards. This year’s winners showcased an extraordinary range of talent, innovation, and artistic excellence across the genre, with remarkable contributions from both emerging and established artists.

Deantha Edmunds received the prestigious Classical Composition of the Year award for Angmalukisaa. As Canada’s first Inuk classical singer, Edmunds continues to break barriers and bring Indigenous perspectives to the forefront of classical music. Angmalukisaa is a powerful and deeply moving composition that reflects her unique artistic voice and cultural heritage.

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Gustavo Gimeno, was awarded Classical Album of the Year (Large Ensemble) for their recording of Messiaen: Turangalîla-Symphonie. Featuring internationally renowned pianist Marc-André Hamelin and ondes Martenot specialist Nathalie Forget, the performance captures the dynamic and evocative spirit of Messiaen’s iconic work with brilliance and depth.

Montreal-based string ensemble collectif9 earned the award for Classical Album of the Year (Small Ensemble) for Rituæls. Known for their innovative and theatrical approach to chamber music, collectif9 delivers an immersive listening experience that reimagines classical repertoire in striking new ways.

Renowned mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo took home Classical Album of the Year (Solo Artist) for Freezing. Her exceptional vocal artistry and interpretive depth shine throughout the album, solidifying her reputation as one of the leading voices in contemporary classical performance.

The 2025 JUNO Awards once again highlighted the richness and diversity of Canada’s classical music scene. These winners represent the evolving landscape of the genre, blending tradition with innovation and captivating audiences worldwide. The Canadian Music Centre extends congratulations to all of the nominees for their outstanding work.
