Mata Hari (1876-1917) was both renowned and despised as an exotic dancer and courtesan throughout Europe in the early 20th century. Her conviction and execution by France on charges of spying for Germany during World War I is but one aspect of her ongoing notoriety. Viewed with a 21st century lens, her practice of exoticizing and appropriating a colonized culture contributed to a continuum that resulted in persistent, harmful, and misrepresentative stereotypes (such as equating Asian women with hyper-sexualization) that are offensive and dangerous to our society.

The Mata Hari Songbook is a collection of ten songs from the one-woman show, One Last Night with Mata Hari. A two-act show, it was conceived in 2011 by two longtime Queen’s University professors, composer/pianist John Burge and writer/director, Craig Walker. A solo-woman show with acting male pianist, acclaimed soprano and chanteuse, Patricia O’Callaghan, premiered this cabaret-style musical in 2017 at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts, Kingston, Ontario. Mata Hari’s imprisonment during the final months of her life becomes the springboard for the show which takes place on the evening of October 14, 1917, the night before she faces the firing squad. The setting is Paris’s Saint Lazare Prison, where prisoners, prison staff and the Sisters of Marie-Joseph, are gathered to hear Mata Hari recount her life in stories and songs. While John Burge’s music has a modern-day Broadway sensibility, it draws heavily upon the harmonic language of the French Impressionism and the late German Romantic traditions.

Mata Hari (1876-1917) était à la fois réputée et méprisée à cause de son statut d’effeuilleuse et de courtisane dans toute l’Europe du début du XXe siècle. Condamnée et exécutée par la France pour espionnage au profit de l’Allemagne pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, Mata Hari connaît encore aujourd’hui une notoriété qui ne se démentit pas. En perpétuant l’appropriation d’une culture colonisée et en apportant à sa danse un caractère exotique, elle a contribué à créer des stéréotypes persistants, nuisibles et erronés (tels que l’assimilation des femmes asiatiques à l’hypersexualisation) ce qui, à travers le prisme du XXIe siècle, est offensant et nocif pour notre société.

The Mata Hari Songbook constitue un recueil de dix chansons tirées du « one-woman show » One Last Night with Mata Hari. Le compositeur/pianiste John Burge et le scénariste/metteur en scène Craig Walker, tous deux professeurs de longue date à l’Université Queen’s, ont conçu ce spectacle en deux actes en 2011. La revue musicale, mettant en vedette la soprano au talent éclectique Patricia O’Callaghan, fut créée en 2017 au Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts à Kingston, en Ontario. Le point de départ du spectacle est l’emprisonnement de Mata Hari. L’histoire se déroule le soir du 14 octobre 1917, la veille de son passage devant le peloton d’exécution. L’action se situe à la prison Saint-Lazare de Paris, où les prisonniers, le personnel pénitentiaire et les Soeurs de Marie-Joseph écoutent Mata Hari qui raconte sa vie au fil de récits et de chansons. Empreinte de la sensibilité moderne qui rappelle Broadway, la musique de John Burge puise dans le langage harmonique des compositeurs impressionnistes français et du courant de l’exotisme, évoquant aussi le romantisme allemand de la fin du XIXe siècle.
