    The Composer’s Voice

    New Music from Bowling Green

This CD contains works by six composers of various nationalities, including the United States (Pittsburgh, Dallas, Ohio, Washington), Germany, the Czech Republic, and Canada.

The Bowling Green Philharmonica was founded in 1918 by decree of the university president at Bowling Green State University. In the last several years the Philharmonia, with conductor Emily Freeman Brown, has established a wider reputation through its performances at the Bowling Green New Music and Art Festival. Works of composers such as John Adams, Gunther Schuller, John Corigliano and Joan Tower have been performed under their guidance. The pieces on this disc were first performed at this festival and recorded during the fall months of 1996 and 1997.

    WHAT THE CRITICS SAY:

“[Jeff Ryan’s] imaginitive use of orchestra and accompanying voice is particularly striking. A good friend who happened to be listening with me and who also happens to be a very fine tenor, immediately wondered what sort of music the composer would write for his voice. That says more than anything I could say about the immediacy of Ryan’s music.”

    – John Story, Fanfare
