Robert Lemay: Cinq études

for alto saxophone

This series of etudes was commissioned by Canadian saxophonist Jean-François Guay. Even if they are primarily concert pieces, each étude explores a specific technical aspect of the saxophone: the double and triple tonguing, the subtone, the altissimo, the multiphonics as well as the rapid changes of registers. Each piece is a tribute to a great saxophonist/pedagogue: Marcel Mule, Jean-Marie Londeix, Eugene Rousseau, Frederick Hemke and Daniel Deffayet.

A prolific composer, Robert Lemay has written over a hundred works, almost half of which are for saxophone. His music is performed regularly in concerts in North America, Asia, Europe and South America. Twenty of his pieces are featured on 18 different CDs in Canada, Europe and the U.S.

Jean-François Guay is one of Canada’s leading specialists in contemporary saxophone music; several works for saxophone are dedicated to him. He studied in Canada with Rémi Ménard and in France with Jean-Marie Londeix. He teaches saxophone at the CÉGEP Marie-Victorin and at the Université de Montréal.
