“I became particularily fascinated by Johannes Kepler, one of the first great empirical scientists as witnessed by his discovery of the laws of planetary motion; and yet, paradoxically, a fervent religious mystic and astrologer. Kepler perceived his lifework as revealing the divine harmonic proportions and celestial music of the heavens. He used the term ‘celestial machine’ to describe the clockwork and mechanism of the solar system. The idea of harmonic clockwork seems an appropriate one when considering the intricate counterpoint and dynamic rhythmic motion found in music of the Baroque. I hope that a glimmer of the inner mechanisms and workings of the celestial machine has also found its way into this work.”
