This is a piece inspired by the tumultuous & remarkable life of Igor Gouzenko, Russian-Canadian cypher clerk whose desperate admission to the Canadian government made him a traitor abroad & a suspect at home — while it also set off the Cold War at the end of 1945. I first got into his story researching for a trailer that I enjoyed scoring, called Out in the Cold, by Toronto filmmaker Geordie Sabbagh. Geordie pointed me to the 1960s film-score sound of Russian film composer, Mikael Tariverdiev, and I had fun imagining life back then, through the sounds of his scores & trying to evoke Gouzenko’s journey afresh. The creation and recording was made possible by the AWFC’s (Alliance for Women Film Composers) Recording Initiative Program.
