Sonata-Rhythmica is a three movement work for solo vibraphone. The first movement opens with an incessant undulating figure which establishes a prominent, yet off kilter pulse. This pulse then engages in a series of transformations, culminating in its brief disappearance, and then re-emergence through a chain of tuplet figures. A brief development section follows featuring a secondary theme which cascades up and down the instrument before finally returning to its original register. The opening incessant figure returns, this time with a clearer, and more defined and sense of pulse.

The second movement opens with a mysterious lyrical theme that has found itself shattered. It can only be heard fragmented and scattered over large areas of the instrument. Over the course of the movement, the theme gradually recollects itself while we encounter new sounds and sonorities not previously heard. A collection of contemplative chords bring the movement to a close.

By integrating material from both in the first and second movement, the third movement yearns to move beyond what it has already been. The first section of the movement features highly active themes and volatile harmonic material which culminate in a series of sensational resolutions that could not be achieved by the previous two movements. The final moments of the movement feature a return of sonorities heard in the first movement, which are now re-energized and more robust after their journey.
