The Salzinnes Manuscript (2020) was commissioned by the vocal ensemble Psallentes in Belgium, for sopranos and string trio (the Goeyvaerts String Trio, also of Belgium). The Salzinnes Manuscript is an illuminated book of chants; the actual 16th century manuscript, originally from Belgium, is housed at the Nova Scotia Gallery of Art. Psallentes was scheduled to perform a selection of chants from the manuscript, along with an exhibition of the manuscript itself, and they asked me to compose a new work to be presented on that concert. In studying the catalog from the Nova Scotia Gallery of Art, I selected some writing by curator Judith Dietz, that describes the process of illuminating manuscripts. To that I added additional historical text by Cennino Cennini on the art of illumination. These became the text of the work. The exhibition had to be postponed due to the pandemic, but Psallentes and the Goeyvaerts String Trio managed to create a video performance at the Sint-Niklaas church in Belgium.
