Transcriber Notes

These transcriptions were made for my organ students, who were looking for organ solo pieces to be used for celebrative occasions, especially ones with articulation and reflecting something of the performance practice of the time.

The French High-Baroque Prelude to a Te Deum of Marc-Antoine Charpentier requires a notes inégales approach and an articulation somewhat detached rather than legato. Written for an ensemble of Trumpets, Strings, Organ and Timpani in Rondo form, the transcription uses a concerto-style with solo presentation followed by Tutti.

Jeremiah Clarke’s late Baroque Prince of Denmark’s March, often referred to as “Trumpet Voluntary”, written for harpsichord, though not using the French notes inégales, requires a somewhat similar non-legato approach and is here transcribed in a similar concerto style.

Performance notes:

1. Ornamentations:

• : short shake starting on upper note

• : full trill, starting on upper note

2. Articulation:
• Staccati: Detach, shorten note value by half
• Marcati: Detach broadly, shorten note value by quarter or less
• Notes without articulation signs are played legato

My sincere thanks to Dr. Diederick Basson, Stellenbosch, South Africa, for the digital PDF transcription.
