This is my first piece for full orchestra; a maiden voyage. While writing this piece, I often thought of a large ship venturing into unfamiliar waters. I didn’t know why I had that image in my head, but when I was looking for a title, I remembered the photo of my father on the ship he travelled on to Canada from Italy in 1952; the name of the ship was the M.v. Saturnia. He didn’t know what he would find and what kind of life he would build. He too was in unfamiliar territory. He prospered and lived well in Canada until his passing in 2015. I am certain that he would have been proud to know that the orchestral piece that is taking me on a new adventure is called, Saturnia.
