Each half of Phoebe Wang’s poem elegantly complements the other. They are a study in contrasts, yet share subtle and obvious connections. I tried to echo that structure in my music; the two movements share the same basic musical materials, but the second movement, with its depiction of heartbreak, is in some ways the negative image of the first.

This piece was commissioned by the Orpheus Choir of Toronto, Robert Cooper, Artistic Director. It is dedicated to my dear friend Sylvia Hunter, with special thanks to Robert Cooper, Phoebe Wang, and the members of the Orpheus Choir of Toronto.
