Around my tenth year as a saxophone teacher at the University of Ottawa, I realized that many of my former students stopped playing the saxophone only a few years (if not a few months) after finishing their studies. Although these students have reached a very respectable and sometimes even excellent level at their instrument, the limited market for music, especially that of the saxophone, means that even the best students must seek other occupations in order to earn a living. It is however sad that many former students see the thousands of hours spent learning the great works of the repertoire disappear into oblivion. Saxcrilège is therefore a nostalgic and humorous tribute to all saxophone students and seeks to make peace with the time and effort invested in learning the repertoire.
