Blooming in Murk” is an open score work for unspecifed instruments commissioned by the Artemis Musicians’ Society in Vancouver in 2024. The work can be played by any number of melodic instruments (including melodic percussion), and has optional parts for non-pitched percussion as well.
The title comes from a rough translation of Mohammad Reza Shajarian’s “از خون جوانان وطن لله دمیده” [Tulips blossom from the blood of nation’s youth], which was a protest song in response to the Iranian government’s violent crackdown on its own people. Given the nature of AMA’s mandate in addressing violence, I thought that this notable song can provide the basic motivic, rhythmic and structural material for the work.
The work consists of 4 movements, each of which provide instructions about their performance. Details regarding shifts in range, dynamics or color are provided atop each movement or section, as well as information about optional instruments or other musical decisions. Each movement contains some written material as well as some elements of improvisation.
Musicians are to take full advantage of exercising their creativity in in shaping the improvised sections. The work can be played by at least two melodic instruments, but ideally the ensemble will include at least 4 melodic instruments.
Many thanks to the Artemis Musicians’ Society, and Katelin Coleman for this commission. “Blooming in Murk” Received its world-premier in May 2024, in Vancouver.
