Each half of Phoebe Wang’s poem elegantly complements the other. They are a study in contrasts, yet share subtle and obvious connections. I tried to echo that structure in my music; the two movements share the same basic musical materials, but the second movement, with its depiction of heartbreak, is in some ways the negative image of the first.

This piece was commissioned by the Orpheus Choir of Toronto, Robert Cooper, Artistic Director. The version with piano instead of harp was created at the request of Brian Bartoldus.
