Beginnings was written as a multi-instrumental showpiece for McKenzie Warriner, wherein she could both sing and play piano. Featuring my own poetry, it is thematically a monologue on the concept of beginnings and the frustration inherent to the process of beginning anything, be it a book, performance, or career. It is recommended to be programmed as the first piece on whatever programme it may appear, although this is certainly not a hard-and-fast rule. Two specific performance scenarios guaranteed its existence:

1. I wanted a piece around this theme to be included on the Centrediscs album of my work “Unfinished Business,” released in 2023.
2. Warriner wanted a multi-instrumental work for the first round of the 46th Eckhardt-Gramatté Competition, which she went on to win.
