The process for this composition began with studies in early opera, up to and including eighteenth century practice. The goal was to create a synthesis of libretti to be used for How long is a day in the dark. I found this task to be better suited for a larger composition, and settled for one dramatically placed monologue from Die Zauberflöte. The monologue is taken from Act II, xii in which Monostatos, a moor in league with the Queen of the Night, approaches the queen’s daughter Pamina expressing his desire for her sublime beauty and his wish to give her – ein Küßchen. An eerie air of danger and evil-obsession is detected. In choosing this text, I was fond of the idea of setting words from Die Zauberflöte, a German Singspiel, that had not yet been set to music. Also, the dramatic placement of the monologue within the opera captured my attention. In the previous scene, for vocal quintet, the music has an almost rejoicing quality of assurance and is set for the Three Ladies of the Queen of the Night, Tamino, and Papageno. In this scene Tamino and Papageno stand firm in their vow not to speak one word, and the Three Ladies are at a loss to intimidate them over the arrival of the queen. Following Monostatos’s monologue, the moor sings an aria re-articulating his desires set forth in the monologue. The music accompanying the aria is sprightly and full of irony considering the atmosphere of suspicion and anxiety created by the moor’s possessive nature. The music has a light-hearted effect and is almost comical in its orchestration. In setting this text for women’s voices, I hope to, on the one hand, retain a level of irony that is present in the opera, and on the other hand, make a comment on the psychological state of mind of the possessor. One may consider the use of female voices to express – Das Mädchen wird mich noch um meinen Verstand Bringen – as ironic in this context; or this usage may represent the intense frame of mind of one expressing their desire for ‘the object’ by projecting their thoughts and actions on to said object.
