Family Sons and Dotters is a four movement trio for Clarinet in Bb, Violoncello and Piano that was written about my family. Each movement represents a different member of my immediate family and something that I associate with them. The first movement is about my father and golf. The second movement is about my mother who is a writer and so opens and closes with the clarinet playing key clicks which represents the clicking of a type writer, a sound I heard often and always associate with my mother and her writing. The middle of this movement also introduces a melody that my mom sang to us as children as we were going to bed. The third movement is about my sister and her new energetic puppy. The final movement is about my brother and a football game that his team lost. The final movement also brings together motives from all the movements, as we were all there to witness this crushing defeat back in Fall 1997 when my brother was just finishing high school.
