Elegy for Chamber Ensemble is a short work for chamber ensemble, which was composed for the 2020 edition of the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra’s “New Generation Composers Workshop.” From a programmatic standpoint, the work was inspired by various events that occurred throughout the year, and the general political turmoil across the globe. It is essentially structured in three main parts: the first section is made up of an atmospheric introduction, which leads to a violin cadenza; this in turn is followed by a slow and lyrical but melancholic theme, presenting the main melodic material of the work. The second section contrasts significantly with the first, and is faster in tempo, and far more aggressive and rhythmic in character; it develops motivic fragments from the first section, eventually building to a climax. The last section serves as an incomplete recapitulation, recalling the sombre material from the first section in a fragmented manner, which is never completely re-established, however, and eventually dies away.
