This composition explores the melodic quality of wind instruments in a symphonic band, fusing stylistically Jazz elements and Western classical music practice in a loose “theme and variation” form. The music intends to showcase different instruments as solo or performing as a group, and special highlights are given to the “underscored” instruments such as Euphonium, tuba, timpani, and cymbals. The title is chosen to pay tribute to the community of students and scholars engaged in higher education in their pursuit of knowledge. The whimsical and light-hearted nature of the piece suggests “pop” cliché of the “nonchalant” character of a scholastic individual. This work is commissioned by the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (Canada) in partnership with the University of Ottawa.
