Sun was commissioned by the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and received its world premiere at the gala opening concert of Roy Thomson Hall, Toronto’s new concert hall, on September 13, 1982.
The piece takes the form of a day in the life of the sun, beginning with the soft light of dawn, rising to the great energy of the noon heat, then cooling to end quietly with the twilight. The text consists of words for sun from around the world, starting in the Far East and travelling (via) Asia, Europe and Africa, to the Americas.

Sun est une commande du Chœur Mendelssohn de Toronto et fut chanté en première mondiale lors du concert de gala du 13 septembre 1982, marquant l’inauguration du Roy Thomson Hall, la nouvelle salle de concert de Toronto.
La pièce prend la forme d’une journée dans la vie du soleil, débutant par le lumière douce de l’aube pour atteindre la puissante énergie de la chaleur du midi avant de se refroidir et disparaître dans la paix du crépuscule. Le texte est constitué du mot soleil dans différentes langues de l’univers à partir de l’Asie, puis de l’Europe et de l’Afrique et, finalement, des Amériques.
