Rivers #7: Writing for Speaking Pianist with Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa

We are thrilled to present a workshop with Rachel Kiyo Iwasaa, one of the leading contemporary pianists working in Canada today. Rachel has commissioned or premiered works by many of Canada’s most eminent composers, such as Hildegard Westerkamp, Rodney Sharman, Jocelyn Morlock, Nicole Lizée, Jordan Nobles, Jeffrey Ryan, Farshid Samandari, Marci Rabe, and Emily Doolittle. She also has a long-standing relationship with both the CMC and the CLC, having performing the closing concert at the 2017 ISCM World New Music Days in Vancouver, and collaborating with Cris Derksen on the first ever ISCM Indigenous Commissioning Project, produced with the assistance of both the CLC, and CMC British Columbia.

Rachel will speak about the aesthetics and practicalities of writing for a speaking pianist. Through the presentation, Rachel will also demonstrate successful examples of this unique fusion of poetry and music.
