Toronto’s Robin Hatch is a gifted keyboard colorist whose output spans propulsive electro-pop to aggressive contrapuntal piano. She’s got an inventive and sophisticated outlook on harmony that reflects both an understanding of jazz and all eras of concert music. Phrases scamper off in unforeseen directions as she reaches unexpectedly for pungent dissonances or into the tradition, for a tidy cadence. Couple this with a firm grasp of synthesizer and a rock-derived performance sensibility (both in terms of her extrovert visual aesthetic and touch on the piano), and you’ve got an utterly unique individual. The collection of pieces for Multilocation sees her in two locales: in residence at the National Music Centre wrangling the infamous TONTO and a number of other electronic instruments and floating in green-screen limbo unleashing various pianistic wonders.

Robin Hatch

Robin is a neo-classical composer and keyboardist from Toronto, ON. She is influenced by poststructuralist romanticism, atonal minimalism, and rethinking progressive rock for piano. Her self-titled piano record received Contemporary Album of the Month in the Guardian (****, Dec 2019), and her music can be heard in the current season of the Blowback podcast (Stitcher Premium). She has played live on CBC’s Q, and recently completed a residency at the NMC in Calgary, recording a series of minimalist quartets through the TONTO synthesizer. Photo credit: Stephanie Montani
