Ugly Beauties

The Ugly Beauties Trio is a configuration of some of Canada’s top improvisers: pianist Marilyn Lerner, cellist Matt Brubeck and drummer Nick Fraser. Formed in 2007 and named for Thelonius Monk’s composition Ugly Beauty, UB’s music traverses the worlds of improvised music and modern jazz, with strong elements of contemporary classical music and world music.  Repertoire is an organic mixture of both written and improvised material and is generated by all three members. Ugly Beauties sound can best be described as abstract lyricism, swing and groove. 

The use of cello in lieu of traditional upright bass in the context of a piano trio, means it can fu function in a dual role-either as lead instrument, or in pinning down the bass. In this trio, all roles are interchangeable. The synergy, virtuosity and uncanny communication are what makes Ugly Beauties so compelling to listen to. Contents May Shift is Ugly Beauties’ third recording.
