Bio:
Monica Pearce is a Texas-based Canadian composer specializing in opera and chamber music with a penchant for toy piano—as heard throughout Textile Fantasies. In 2008, she co-founded the emerging composer collective, the Toy Piano Composers with Chris Thornborrow. From 2008 to 2018, the group presented over 120 new works and released a self-titled disc on Redshift Records. Pearce’s compositions have been performed and commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, International Contemporary Ensemble, New Music Detroit, Angela Schwarzkopf, Riot Ensemble, Chamber Cartel, Array Ensemble, Xenia Pestova, Bicycle Opera Talisker Players, New Fangled Opera, junctQín keyboard collective, and Thin Edge New Music Collective, among others. In 2022 she was nominated for Classical Composer of the Year by the 2022 East Coast Music Awards for Maureen Batt’s recording of Aunt Helen. Her operas have been performed across Canada and the United States and toured across Ontario, while her toy piano works are frequently played internationally—notably by celebrated performer Margaret Leng Tan.
