There is magical feeling that occurs when visiting places that are old and steeped in history, such as Rome, London UK, or Istanbul, and maybe a similar feeling of ancientness also exists when visiting the Northern shield regions of Ontario. The repeated ostinato might represent what we perceive as the constant and unchanging passage of time in measured increments, independent of what changes and upheaval is happening in the world.
The initial sketches for Time Eternal were made on an iPhone app on a trip to London, followed by Istanbul. This was followed by a live performance in Toronto, with violin, and then the final studio version.
Rose Bolton is one of Canada’s most innovative and multi-faceted composers. As well as having an extensive track record writing music for documentary film for broadcasters such as CBC, TVO, Logo TV, and Arte in France, her music for electronics and instruments have been part of several innovative multimedia projects. 2013 saw the premiere of a work for the players of Toronto’s Continuum Contemporary Music with 16 speaker ambient electronics. In 2013 she also presented four works for violin, electronic samples and film at the Music Gallery’s X Avant festival, and collaborated on a multimedia installation at the Gladstone Hotel’s Grow Op event. In 2011 she was commissioned by the Canadian Music Centre to create a sound and video installation for Toronto’s 2011 Nuit Blanche, and close to 1000 people experienced the piece during the all-night event.
June 2015 will be the world premiere of The Song of Extinction, a unique 45-minute, fully immersive visual and sonic experience examining the calamitous impact human beings are having on the planet and its creatures. Presented by Music in the Barns, this piece will combine an ensemble of strings, choir, percussion, organ, ambient atmospheres and found sounds, with stunning large-scale projections by filmmaker Marc de Guerre, blending digital visual effects, archival footage and original 4K material.
