Canada’s first and foremost professional gamelan, the Evergreen Club not only mixes Eastern and Western musical styles but also, through commissioning new works specifically written for its instrumentation, traditional and contemporary styles. In keeping with these cultural and historical ‘crossovers’ ‘Road to Ubud’, the latest CD from The Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan, features world premiere recordings by renowned composers John CAGE, Gilles TREMBLAY, and James TENNEY. The composers, through the use of unusual instrumentation, tuning preparations, or conceptual foundations, take gamelan into previously unexplored terrain.
