The composer writes: This short concert overture was inspired by a 1922 watercolour painting by Wassily Kandinsky, “To the Sea and the Sun.” Kandinsky was himself influenced by music, and believed there are strong connections between visual and aural art-forms. (“Music is the ultimate teacher,” he said.) I like to think that the dramatic colours and bold lines of Kandinsky’s abstract art finds an analogy in my use of instrumental colour.
