One of the composer’s earlier extended works, the Trio for Tenor Saxophone, Cello and Piano owes some of its inspiration to Paul Hindemith’s Trio Op. 47 for heckelphone (or tenor saxophone), viola and piano, but here the timbral and registral affinities between the tenor saxophone and cello are highlighted. A recording of this trio with the composer on saxophone was reworked as material for a later piece, “(spooky actions) at a distance,” featuring the same three instruments plus electronics.
