This piece was requested of me by Bernard Blary, a spectacular flautist and respected musician. Its writing was also encouraged by Paula DeWit, conductor of the local community orchestra. She professes to dislike 12-tone music, so naturally I wrote my first movement in that style, choosing my rows however so that they are not excessively dissonant or atonal. The result sounds Romantic to me. The second movement is slow and introspective, in my more usual style of dissonant tonality. The third is a reworking of the last movement of my earlier Cello Sonata, a rollicking modern-day gigue that I have always thought one of my best efforts.
