As the landscape of contemporary classical music continues to change, it is increasingly common for composers to embrace a DIY approach to disseminating their music and the music of others to the wider world. Whether that means producing recording sessions (see the CLC’s recent workshop), organising interdisciplinary socials, or as is the case with Paolo Griffin, starting an ensemble and self-producing concerts.

In 2018, Paolo founded Freesound: a contemporary music performance collective of eight performers that emphasises collaboration and experimentation. Freesound performs music from a wide array of artists, and explores the creation of new works, non-traditional approaches to concert formats, and more. Recent concert highlights Mostly Open Scores, featuring music by Ryoko Akama, James Tenney, and Maria Eduarda Martins, and a feature in the WholeNote Magazine.

Paolo is also the Managing Director of Xenia Concerts, designing and delivering adaptive, accessible, and sensory-friendly concerts for the autism and disability communities. Between Freesound and Xenia Concerts, Paolo has a hand in producing over 40 concerts a year in and around Toronto.
