Bassist Rob Clutton is one of Toronto’s most vivid musical imaginations, both as a composer and on his instrument. Whether performing as soloist, leading groups such as the Cluttertones and the Rob Clutton Trio, or working as a collaborator within someone else’s project, Clutton is always taking artistic risks, but never conspicuously so. Instead, his idiosyncratic choices quietly reward attentive listeners with oblique beauty and small reminders of music’s fundamental elusiveness and spontaneity. Deftly weaving his patient, introspective bass playing and field recordings, the audio work Sleeping Duck Ventriloquism offers another masterful illustration of Clutton’s unusual sensibility.
