Rivers #9: Mental Health for Artists with Dr. Yu Fei Xia, MD

Online and In-Person: Thursday October 17 @ 2PM

Being a composer is stressful. Deadlines, rejections, self-doubt, managing work-life balance – heck, even managing work-work balance between your creative projects and your ‘straight job’ – and economic insecurity are persistent challenges that many of us struggle with on a day-to-day basis. These struggles are exacerbated by the difficulty in navigating the often complicated and opaque universe of mental health services in Canada.

We will be joined by Dr. Yu Fei Xia from the Al & Malka Green Artists’ Health Centre. Based out of Toronto Western Hospital, the Artists’ Health Centre is a team of healthcare professionals dedicated to providing affordable and accessible integrated care to artists from all disciplines, including arts students and arts educators.. Dr. Xia (she/her) is a GP psychotherapist passionate about providing OHIP covered group and individual psychotherapy for artists through the ups and downs of their lives and careers. She completed medical training at McMaster University and her residency and fellowship at the University of Toronto. Throughout her medical career she has looked for ways in which the arts and medicine can enhance one another. Her projects have been presented nationally and awarded at international Health Humanities conferences.

If you’re someone who has struggled with mental issues related to your artistic practice, or you’ve struggled to navigate and access mental health services (particularly those available on a sliding scale), then please join us for this important workshop.
