Inspired by a year-long sojourn in Spain and Europe, Danielle Cumming features works by composers who, like her, spent time in other cultures and came away with their own musical impressions, or postcards.Spirit Reel is a set of variations on an original reel of the same title.Vivianne Cardinal assembled a group of renowned musicians whose improvising and accompanying prowess can't be disputed. Saxophonist Phil Dwyer, trumpeter Steve McDade, drummer Billy Drummond, pianist Brian Buchanan and bassist Jim Vivian each contribute with precision and creativity.The selections on this recording offer a taste of some of the colourful and stylistically diverse types of music that embody the spirit of exploration and eclecticism shared by the opening and closing decades.Thomas Baker, piano and Kye Marshall, cello recorded live November 1996, at Trinity United Church, Uxbridge, Ontario.Mr. Underhill writes: "I have long been fascinated by the unusual and poetic place-names for lunar features which were created by Johannes Ricciocoli in the mid-17th century. One such name is the 'Bay of Dew' or 'Sinus Roris' in Latin. The 'Bay of Dew' is in fact a crater on the moon, but in my mind, I envisaged a tiny body of water that had been entirely created by the gradual collection of precious drops of dew as they formulated in the early morning hours."Go to Top
