Saxophonist and flutist John Reid is from Calgary, Alberta, Canada and has been playing professionally for over 20 years in a variety of contexts including: jazz combo, big band, recording session, symphony, radio & TV, and freelance engagements. He has been leading his own jazz groups since 1974, when (at the encouragement of teachers Phil Nimmons and Oscar Peterson) he formed a quartet at the first Banff Centre Jazz Workshop.

Over the years, Reid has accompanied Harry Connick Jr., Tom Jones, Della Reese, Red Skelton, Lou Rawls, Gino Vanelli, Johnny Mathis, and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra among others. Reid is the Founder and a Past Chairman of the Calgary International Jazz Festival.

Island Shuffle, which includes pieces dedicated to such individuals as the late trumpet player Woody Shaw and Reid’s eldest son Stuart, draws on varied musical ideas such as 16-bar blues, bop, rubato improvisation, bright samba and swing.
