This poem is a luminous evocation of spiritual experience through the metaphor of physical love. San Juan de la Cruz (1542-1591), one of the « barefoot Carmelites, », suffered brutal persecution at the hands of fellow monks, who kidnapped and imprisoned him in the dungeon of their Toledo monastery. It has been suggested that his daring escape from prison is reflected in the poem, with its imagery of emerging from a sleeping household into the adventure of the dark night. Though the poem has a dazzling and powerful unity, it is entitled Canciones – songs. I have taken the hint, and attempted to endow each song with its own character, while maintaining the sense of continuous mystical ascension.

Ce poème est une lumineuse évocation d’une expérience spirituelle à travers la métaphore de l’amour physique Saint Jean de la Croix (1542-1591), l’un cdes « Carmélites aux pieds nu, » fut brutalement persécuté par les membres de sa congrégation qui l’ont kidnappé et emprisonné dans le cachot de leur monastère à Tolède. Certains commentateurs ont suggéré qu’il a évoqué son audacieuse évasion dans ce poème è travers l’image narrant son émergence d’une maison endormie et son aventure dans la nuit noire. Bien que le poème soit unifié avec beaucoup de force et d’éclat, il s’intitule ‘Canciones’ – ‘chants’. J’ai pris en considération la suggestion impliquée dans le titre et essayé de donner à chaque chant son caractèere particulier tout en maintenant le sens d’une ascension mystique continue.
