Wascana Park is one of the largest urban parks in North America with an area of 2,300 acres (Central Park in New York City has only 834 acres). In the centre is the Wascana Lake that serves as a home for a variety of water fowl and marsh animals. Willow Island is accessed by ferry boats (there are no bridges to Willow Island), and there are two fire pits, several barbecues, tables, and washrooms for the perfect picnic. Flower beds are cultivated in the summer at the Legislative Building, the Bandstand, and the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, all within the park. In the winter, a path around Willow Island is cleared for skaters, hockey rinks plowed, and an area set aside for cross country skiers. The Waskimo Festival is held in February and features ice sculptures, pancake breakfasts, entertainment, sleigh rides, fireworks, and a food court. In the summer, there is a steady stream of concerts presented from the Bandstand next to the lake as well as special events for Canada Day, the Dragon Boat Races, Pile O Bones Sunday , Wascana Centre Children’s Day, and many others. Wascana Park Septet tries to capture the fun and contentment one would experience taking a walk through the park or just lying on the grass on a sunny day.
