There Came A Young Man is a one-movement work that features a number of Scottish dance forms as found in traditional music sets. The work explores these Celtic styles using authentic dance tunes and freely composed original materials. The inspiration for this work was a recent trip to Scotland that featured an exploration of the Isle of Skye and parts of the Trossachs. The jig, There Came A Young Man, opens the work and is followed by the complimentary jig, Drummond Castle. A freely composed section brings us to the lament, Donald of Duntulm, written to mark the death of the last King of The Isles, Donald McDonald. Duntulm was the original McDonald Clan seat and is currently a very interesting ruin on Skye. The work concludes with a mixture of original material and the reel, Alan Come Across to Me. It seemed a fitting ending to the opening jig which is about a young man coming to court a young lady while the concluding reel’s story is one of a young lady calling her young man to her side.
