‘The Broken Islands’ begins with the stillness of daybreak over the Pacific Ocean. The piece evolves into a playground of sea creatures, tiny to the great gray whale, while kayaking though lagoons, sandbars, tidal pools, and deep water channels to the birthplace of the Tseschaht Fist Nations people, Benson Island, now closed for camping.

Rehearsal 9 is the whaling music I heard on this camping and kayaking week to the Broken Group islands, an archipelago of more than 100 islands and rock crops belonging to the Canadian Pacific Rim National Park reserve In British Columbia.
