The Perth Road Suite takes its name from the Perth Road, a historical road located in Eastern Ontario that connects the town of Perth with the city of Kingston. Scottish immigrants settled the area and as a result the names of the villages and towns along its route reflect this heritage. While looking for a new life these immigrants also brought their musical traditions with them, which have over time become part of the musical fabric of Canada. The three Scottish dance forms presented here utilize authentic and original material in their construction and their titles reflect on features found on this historic road. The work opens with a reel in cut-time, The Glenburnie Rant. The second movement, On a Bank of Flowers, is a traditional air that features a slow introduction followed by a lyrical setting of this traditional melody. The final movement, Jill of Inverary’s Jig, features the interplay of different musical ideas with the original material featured in this movement.
