« Cimbalom » is dedicated to the Latvian pianist Diāna Zandberga It was composed for Ms. Zandberga’s 2013 concert series « Landscapes of Hungarian and Latvian Piano Music », presented by The Embassy of Hungary and the Latvian Composers’ Union. To imitate the characteristic sound of a Hungarian folk instrument – the cimbalom, this composition, in conjunction with unconventional techniques used directly on the strings of the piano, employs Hungarian scales, harmonies, and singularily characteristic melodic tunes.
