Howl was composed in honour of my two dogs at the time I wrote it, Maggie, and Skip. They used to have a good howl together, and often would sing with my wife and I when we would practice trumpet and trombone. Much of the music in the piece is evocative of the vocalizations the two dogs would make whines, growls, sighs, and of course howling. At the end of the piece the orchestra just gives up trying to musically sound like Maggie and Skip, and just howls!
The percussion is meant to be arranged with timpani in the middle, flanked on either side by the xylophone and chimes, with percussion 1 and 3 stage right, and 2 and 4 stage left, behind the orchestra, for a stereo effect.
