New Vine (2021) is a rewriting of a piece called Vine written for the Ergo ensemble in Canada, which featured more instruments, including the hackbrett, a relative of the hammered dulcimer. I decided to make a new version for the Composers’ Conference of 2021. I completely changed the instrumentation, shortened the work by 10 minutes and added new material. What I kept from the original was a preoccupation with line, with thinking of melody as a vine, which can wind itself around whatever is near. In this case, the instruments wind melody around chords, or sometimes around each other; a kind of continuous winding and unwinding.
