small excesses is the name of the I Ching hexagram no. 62: “flying birds leave behind their sound.”

The composition was initially inspired by Catalonian photographer Xavi Bou’s images of birds in flight. Bou’s innovative technique, “chronophotography”, combines sequential photographs of birds’ flight paths, revealing dramatic drawings in the sky. Hundreds of moments of incrementally changing gestures result in a curving sweep across space. In composing this duo I was intrigued by the gestures that a violinist and pianist make to draw sound from their instruments. How does sound take flight? I kept coming back to the title and wondering, what is excessive? What is small? How do those two seemingly contradictory thoughts go together? Am I going too far, or not far enough? And finally, I returned to my childhood, drifting off to sleep as I listened to my father, a fighter pilot, roaring overhead in flight training drills — raucous sound scrawling across the night sky.

La composition a été initialement inspirée par les images d’oiseaux en vol du photographe catalan Xavi Bou. La technique innovante de Bou, la chronophotographie, combine des photographies séquentielles des trajectoires de vol des oiseaux, révélant des dessins spectaculaires dans le ciel. Des centaines de moments où les gestes changent de façon incrémentielle donnent lieu à un balayage courbe dans l’espace. En composant ce duo, j’ai été intrigué par les gestes que font un violoniste et un pianiste pour tirer le son de leurs instruments. Comment le son prend-il son envol ? Je revenais sans cesse au titre et me demandais ce qui était excessif. Qu’est-ce qui est petit ? Comment ces deux pensées apparemment contradictoires peuvent-elles aller ensemble ? Est-ce que je vais trop loin, ou pas assez loin ? Et enfin, je suis retourné à mon enfance, m’endormant en écoutant mon père, un pilote de chasse, rugir au-dessus de sa tête lors d’exercices d’entraînement au vol – un son rauque griffonnant dans le ciel nocturne.
